I recently met with a guy who is a nurse practitioner who has dreams of starting his own business. He’s been a practicing NP for several years and has a vision of the great Wellness Plan. We sat and discussed some of the realities of business because he’s got an entrepreneurial drive.
I asked him the hard question: “How many calls have you made to get this thing going?” “Oh, I can’t call anybody,” he said.
“Why?”
“What if they don’t like me?”
I mean, ha ha, I get it, I totally get it, because that’s where I am!
I said “They’re gonna like you. You’re likable, you’re very very smart, just pick up the phone and call!”
“Oh, I can’t, I can’t call.”
You NEED to call people! You must call people and when you call them, you need to ask for help. Say “Hi, my name is Dave, this is what I do and I was hoping you could help me with something. Do you have a few minutes?”
Answering the phone takes a while. You get really good over time though. Oh my gosh, for forever and I would define forever as the first three to five years of my entrepreneurial life.
I was afraid to make the phone call – I didn’t want to sound stupid. But the reality is the person on the other side of the phone was afraid that they would sound stupid! Imagine that?!
It may be hard, but don’t be afraid to make a phone call. And every once in a while you’re going to meet somebody on the other side that is not very nice. But kill them with kindness, and if you have to, hang up.
